CBISQT Home Page
The Canadian Honey Council has chosen to participate in developing an On Farm Food Safety program for the production of honey and products of the hive. This program is called the Canadian Bee Industry Safety Quality Traceability (CBISQT) program and it has been developed by beekeepers for beekeepers with funding assistance from industry and Agriculture Agri-Food Canada. It is a preventative approach to food safety control based on the principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) programs. The CBISQT program is expecting to receive technical recognition from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in 2010.
The CBISQT program is voluntary but many customers are requiring HACCP based certification before purchase. This change in the retail industry has been recognized by the Canadian Honey Council and we have been proactive in preparing this manual and record keeping system. Many of the requirements in the CBISQT program are already in place by beekeepers. A Good Production Practices Manual is under development and a web version will be published here as soon as it is approved.
The technical review team who met in Banff in January 2009 to assess the technical soundness of the manual are pictured below.
The Canadian Honey Council has been proactive in recommending standards for bulk honey containers. A detailed standard for drums is now in place. Click her for more information on
